Abstract: Power losses and poor voltage profiles are major challenges in radial distribution networks due to high R/X ratios and increasing load demand. Shunt capacitor placement is an effective method to reduce real power losses and enhance voltage stability. This paper presents an optimal capacitor placement and sizing approach using the Beluga Whale Optimization (BWO) algorithm. Loss Sensitivity Factor (LSF) analysis is employed to identify sensitive buses, followed by BWO-based optimization to determine optimal capacitor sizes. The proposed methodology is tested on standard 34-node and 69-node radial distribution systems. Simulation results demonstrate significant reduction in power losses and improvement in voltage profiles when compared with the base case, proving the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
