An analytical comparison of the performance of OFDM systems using real and complex walsh-hadamard transforms in reducing the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR)

Author(s): Noor S Kadhim and Mohammed Sh Ahmed

Abstract: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is considered an effective technique in digital communications, but the high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) poses a significant challenge. The results of this research, through the comparison of real and complex Walsh-Hadamard transforms, showed that the traditional system recorded the highest PAPR values at CCDF = 10⁻³ (10.34, 10.75, 11.25 dB at N = 128, 256, 1024 respectively), while the use of the real Walsh transform (RWHT), reduced these values (9.66, 10.22, 10.86 dB), and the complex transform (CWHT) achieved the best results (9.15, 9.68, 10.58 dB). As for BER, no differences were observed between the systems in the AWGN channel, while the complex transform outperformed in the selective Rayleigh channel, enhancing the reliability of modern OFDM systems.
