Energy loss analysis and harmonic mitigation using PSCAD/EMTDC

Author(s): Ratnakar N

Abstract: This project is about the harmonic distortion caused by non-linear loads, the effects of harmonic distortion on the energy efficiency of a power system, and the mitigation techniques used to eradicate harmonics. All the specifications of an appliance are compared with those given by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and power loss components are determined through experiments. Due to the growth in power electronics and control system industries, linear loads are being dominated by non-linear loads, which increases harmonic pollution. Different loads, such as monitors, battery chargers, fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, motors, etc., are modeled, and harmonic analysis of these models is performed. Simulation models using PSCAD/EMTDC are employed for the harmonic analysis of a practical system and to design a suitable filter to mitigate harmonics from the system.Harmonic distortion creates problems with power quality, which results in a decrease in the energy efficiency of the power system. Therefore, harmonics must be regularly monitored, and necessary actions must be taken to increase the power factor in the system and save energy by reducing losses in power system components.
